I had a lung transplant when I was 59 years old.
I started having breathing problems in 1998. I could get by at first, but my condition worsened in 2005.
In fact, it got so bad that I could not move around and needed to rely on an oxygen mask to survive. I would be at the hospital for check-ups two to three times a week, which affected my work and even though I was the breadwinner in the home, I had to quit my job.
To make things worse, my wife also had to stop work to take care of me. For almost a year, I had to rely on my family members for both time and money. It made me feel so guilty.
I was fortunate that a call came to inform me that a donor organ was available and I received my transplant in 2006. I've regained my health since and it has relieved me of my dependency on other people.
I no longer depend on an oxygen mask. My wish is to start looking for a job to support myself and my family. I want to be able to pay for my own medical bills.
Organ donation has given me a chance to restart my life. I'm thankful and I want to make things better for my family. Everyone should support organ donation. It gives those who need it renewed hope.
